Cellular signalling pathways are important targets for pharmacological modulation. For many years, our work has focussed on the regulation of Ca2+ signalling in cells, with a particular interest in the nervous system. We have studied the properties, function and regulation of a variety of Ca2+ permeable ion channels including voltage-gated Ca2+ channels, ionotropic glutamate receptors and transient receptor potential (TRP) channels in native cells or after expression in mammalian cells. To study processes regulating neuronal activity and synaptic transmission and plasticity, we record from neuronal cultures and acute brain slices.
